Former Resident, Missing Since Dec. 11; Found Dead Monday
Following a three weeks search, the body of Fred L. Ervin , 57, of 273 Buchanan Street, Gary, Ind., formerly of Rossville, was discovered just before noon Monday, January 2nd, about 2 1/2 miles east of Joliet in a field known as the old Powers race track.
Missing since December 11th, when he disappeared from the E.J. and E. train, on which he was working as a brakeman, the body was discovered by three Joliet hunters who notified the Sheriff's office.
Due to the frozen condition of the body, Will County coroner, William Blood, stated he was unable to determine when Mr. Ervin died, altho he believed death occurred about three weeks ago. There were no marks of violence on the body and his personal effects were intact, including a watch, a wallet containing $5.00 and ten twenty dollar bills in a money belt he was wearing.
Mr. Ervin was identified through papers on his person and by Joseph Govern, head of the special railroad police, who was summoned to the scene.
A report on an autopsy performed Tuesday had not been made Wednesday. However, death was believed to have been from exposure and a possible heart condition.
The coroner and sheriff were unable to explain why he had gone to the old race track, which is about 100 yards west of the E.J. and E. right-of-way. The authorities had been informed that he had suffered amnesia once before and was gone for about two weeks. He may have suffered a reoccurrence, it was reported.
While in Rossville, Mr. Ervin was the first Village Mail Carrier appointed after an examination in August, 1928. The family moved to Gary in 1929. He had been employed with the railroad 37 years.
Surviving are his widow, Mabel, and three sons, Arthur, Edgar and Ross, all of Gary, where they are employed with the U.S. Steel Company.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday) from the Williams and Burns Funeral Home in Gary with interment in Ridgelawn Cemetery in that city.
